Jesse Scott Jones, 46, of Menahga died Wednesday morning when his snowmobile was hit by a vehicle on Hwy. 71, according to a Minnesota State Patrol report. At approximately 7:12 a.m., the report states that Jones was southbound in the ditch east of Hwy. 71 at 350th Street, south of Menahga, when he tried to climb the ditch to get onto the shoulder. Jones' 2007 Polaris 440 snowmobile ended up crossing into the northbound traffic lane, where he was struck by a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville driven by Andrew Vaverek, 30, of Browerville.
The Menahga City Council held a closed special meeting Dec. 21 to consider allegations against an individual subject to its authority. Menahga Police Chief Scott Koennicke, 50, tendered his resignation and the council accepted it, according to City Administrator Gina Ellingson. The city council authorized city staff to post the job opening and Wadena County Sheriff to act as temporary chief law enforcement officer for the interim. "There isn't much I can say now, but, trust me, there'll be much to say in the future," Koennicke said in a phone interview.
PARK RAPIDS, Minn.—Drug investigations have culminated in the arrest of nearly 30 individuals, several in their 50s and even 60s, for meth and opioid sales in Hubbard County in northwest Minnesota. Sixteen suspects were arrested in one day alone, according to Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes. He issued a news release Monday, April 2, stating that investigators focused their investigation on people who sold or distributed meth and prescription drugs.
MENAHGA, Minn. — An 8-year-old girl is expected to be at a Minneapolis hospital for another three or four months after she and two other children were burned after an apparent backyard bonfire explosion in Menahga in northwest Minnesota last month. According to the Wadena County Sheriff report, at approximately 8 p.m. on Sept. 29., the caller reported hearing a loud bang, followed by screaming at the southeast Menahga home. There has been no official details yet on what caused the bonfire explosion.

Copper cuffs handcrafted by Kelly Ringer, owner of ChatterByHammer, will glimmer at a "celebrity gift lounge" next month honoring Golden Globes nominees and presenters. The invitation-only, luxury event will be Jan. 6-7 at an exclusive location in Beverly Hills. It's hosted by GBK Productions, a Los Angeles marketing firm.
Jackpine Writers' Bloc, a regional writing group, celebrates the 25th edition of its literary journal this Saturday, Sept. 17. It's a remarkable milestone. "The Talking Stick" is an annual anthology of poetry, creative nonfiction and fiction, featuring writers with ties to Minnesota. The silver anniversary reunites Jackpine Writers' Bloc founders and early writers with today's readers and writers in a special volume.
