On May 1, the State Senate GOP killed a proposal earlier passed by the House that would have banned the practice of so-called "conversion therapy" for minors. "Conversion therapy" is, of course, meant to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. Parents who are uncomfortable with their LGBTQ children use it as a way of trying to "correct" them, as if the problem is with the children for being who they are and not the parents for refusing to accept them.
It's nice to have a grocery store on the southwest side of town again. What a great looking store: amazing use of space, wide selection of products, and the lighting makes it comfortable to shop in. There is plenty of parking space and the same friendly employees. Thank you! Vickie Nelson Wadena
To the Editor: I long for the good old days when at least one of our major political parties stood for fiscal responsibility. While my fellow Republicans are congratulating themselves on the present state of our economy there are two points I would like to make: One, the current recovery was well underway during the last year of the Obama administration, and, two, the current boom is being financed by borrowed money.
One of the votes held recently in the Minnesota House of Representatives was particularly telling. It wasn't to allocate money. It wasn't to advance policy, really. It was a simple resolution recognizing the role humans have played in climate change: "The Legislature finds and declares that greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activities are a key cause of climate change." The resolution passed with 79 votes - all 75 democrats and four republicans voted in favor. Five republicans did not cast a vote.
Tuesday and Wednesday, June 18 and 19, the Birak Shrine Club and Carden International will present the 65th annual Shrine Circus in Fergus Falls. For many years the businesses in Wadena and Deer Creek have assisted us in our goal of supplying tickets to your area children to attend this circus free of charge. With the assistance of Perham Masonic Lodge, we have also been able to provide busing for these children to and from the circus free of charge. This year the bus will leave Wadena School at 11 a.m. and Deer Creek Community Center at 11:30 a.m. on June 19.
As we watch the situation in Venezuela worsen every day, have you asked yourself why this is happening? Why is it that a country that at one time had the best living conditions in South America, is now reduced to having its citizens eating out of garbage dumps and raiding grave sites to steal jewelry to sell for food? The people of Venezuela were promised and led to believe that socialism was an answer to any problems they had.
If you kill a pre-born sea turtle: $100,000 fine, 1 year in prison. If you kill a pre-born bald eagle: $250,000 fine, 2 years in prison. If you kill a pre-born human being: no penalty. What is wrong with this picture? Elaine Byman Wadena
Dear People of the Great State of Minnesota, Hello! I am a third-grade student in Northern Virginia. In third grade, we do state projects, and I have chosen your state! I am very excited to learn more about the great state of Minnesota as I work on my project.
"equality under the law shall not be abridged or denied on account of gender" Sounds like common sense, doesn't it? In a country whose values are supposed to be equal opportunity for all, one would think an amendment to the State constitution to prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender would be uncontroversial. But when a measure to place the Equal Rights Amendment on the 2020 ballot was brought to a vote in St. Paul, 55 representatives voted against it, including the representative of this district, John Poston.
