BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. — Wilkin County commissioners unanimously approved Tobacco 21 on Tuesday, June 11, raising the purchasing age for tobacco and vaping products sold in the county beginning Sept. 1. A half dozen supporters testified during a public hearing. The initiative was brought forward by Wilkin County Public Health, the county’s We Care Coalition and Partnership 4 Health, the Wahpeton Daily News reported.
MINNEAPOLIS — Gabriele (Anderson) Grunewald, a 2004 Perham High School graduate and one of the country’s top middle-distance runners, died at her home in Minneapolis on Tuesday, June 11, her father confirmed. Grunewald was 32. "She did go to heaven just before 8 tonight," Kim Anderson, Gabriele's father, wrote in a text message. Grunewald was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2009 during her running career with the Minnesota Gophers.
FRAZEE Minn. — A man is dead after being hit by a train here at 12:15 a.m. Sunday, June 9. The incident happened between the Lake Street and Fifth Street crossings. The investigation is ongoing and the name of the victim will be released after notification of relatives.
CLOQUET, Minn. — Police have identified the woman found dead Saturday evening, June 1, on the Fond du Lac Reservation as Wahbinmigisi “Pennie” Robertson, who was last seen May 24. “We’re investigating it as if it were a homicide,” said Sgt. Wade Rasch of St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. Fond du Lac Police Department or St. Louis County should provide further context Monday, Rasch said. Robertson was found by volunteer searchers on the 8100 block of Mahnomen Road. FDL and St. Louis County responded to the scene.
MADISON, Minn. – One person has died and four were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday night, June 1, at the intersection of two county roads north of Madison in western Minnesota. The Lac qui Parle County Sheriff’s Office said the crash was reported at 8:26 p.m. Saturday at County Road 59 and County Road 24. Four people were taken to the Madison hospital with injuries. A fifth person, who had to be extricated from the vehicle, was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and later died, according to the sheriff’s office.
WHITE EARTH, Minn. — Fifteen candidates will compete in a primary election Tuesday, June 4, for White Earth tribal chair. If a candidate receives more than half the votes, he or she is elected tribal chair. If no candidates receive 50 percent, the top two vote-getters will go on to compete in the general election on Aug. 6. The election is being held to fill the unexpired four-year term of former Tribal Chairman Terry Tibbetts, who was elected in 2016 and died on March 17 after a lengthy illness.

PINE CITY, Minn. - The Minnesota conservation officer who drowned in a Pine County Lake on April 19 was not wearing a life jacket when his DNR-issued boat made an abrupt turn, throwing him and a county deputy into Cross Lake, a sheriff's report said. The Pine County sheriff’s report on Thursday said Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Eugene Wynn, 43, and Deputy Scott Grice were responding to a report of something suspicious in the water, possibly a person, in the lake where chunks of winter ice were still floating.
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. — A 20-year-old woman died Tuesday night, April 17, after police say she was stabbed on a playground at a Grand Rapids elementary school. Police were called to Murphy Elementary School at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, where they found Chere Morgan, of Grand Rapids, lying on the playground unconscious with a stab wound to her abdomen. A 15-year-old Grand Rapids boy was standing next to her with a knife in his hand, police said. He was taken into custody at the scene. Morgan was taken to Grand Itasca Hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.
