AirbnbWATCH, a consumer watchdog group, released a report today showing significant price gouging by Airbnb hosts in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for rentals during Super Bowl weekend in the host city for this year's NFL championship game.
BRAINERD, Minn. --The unvaccinated child in Crow Wing County with measles is a student at a local Catholic school, a letter to parents from the Minnesota Department of Health said Wednesday. "This letter is to inform you that measles has been diagnosed in a child who attends St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School," the letter read. "Your child may have been exposed to measles. Measles is a very contagious disease caused by a virus."
Summer is here, the woods and fields are calling, and people want to get out there and enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, Becker, Hubbard, Mahnomen, and to a lesser degree, Otter Tail counties are in the red zone for disease-carrying ticks, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. The most well-known, and the most common, is Lyme Disease, a potentially serious bacterial infection affecting both humans and animals.
A 35-year-old Emden, Ill., man was found dead at his campsite at the 10,000 Lakes Festival early Friday morning. On-site medical staff and Detroit Lakes EMS responded at 5:35 a.m., along with Becker County deputies. Upon arrival it was determined that the man, whose name was not released Friday pending notification of relatives, died earlier in the night. The man's body showed no sign of trauma or foul play.
Two Osage residents were injured when their pickup was rear-ended by a semi tractor-trailer rig late Thursday afternoon on Highway 10 near Wadena. David A. Mantifel, 59, and passenger Raymond R. Mantifel, 84, both of Osage received what the State Patrol termed "minor injuries" when their 1992 Chevy pickup braked for animals on Highway 10 and was rear-ended by a 1998 Kenworth semi driven by Darrin K. Belcourt of Goodridge, Minn. He suffered no apparent injuries, according to the State Patrol. The accident happened on dry pavement at about 5:20 p.m.
The assault trial for Detroit Lakes Superintendent Mark Adams has been postponed and will be moved to the Otter Tail County Courthouse in Fergus Falls. It is now scheduled for the week of May 14-18. The trial was set to start again Monday with jury selection at the Becker County Courthouse, but defense attorney Peter Wold of Minneapolis successfully argued for a change of venue at a hearing on Wednesday. "I was not in favor of it (the change of location)," said Becker County Attorney Joe Evans.
A high speed chase that started in Detroit Lakes early Thursday morning ended when a Becker County deputy executed a maneuver to force the fleeing car into a ditch. The incident begin with a report of an early-morning gas drive-off from the Detroit Lakes Stop-N-Go convenience store, according to a news release from the sheriff's department. A short time later Deputy Todd Glander saw the suspect vehicle driving east on Highway 10 near Frazee traveling at speeds estimated in excess of 100 miles per hour. Bail was set at $75,000 for a semi truck driver accused of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Ahmed Haji Ridhwani, 23, of Columbus, Ohio, appeared in Becker County District Court Wednesday before Judge Jack Pearson. He is charged with a serious felony -- criminal vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident -- for his role in a fatal car-semi crash on Highway 34 Monday evening.
