District 2155 residents came up with the votes needed to pass both questions of an operating levy and building bond ballot Tuesday at Memorial Auditorium in Wadena. A total of 957 voters from the communities of Wadena, Deer Creek and Bluffton turned out on a cold and sunny November day. Election judges also received 56 absentee ballots.
A silo caught fire on the old Don Richter farm southwest of Wadena in Compton Township Thursday morning. Wadena and Deer Creek Fire Departments responded to the call and removed wet, burnt silage from a trough in sub-zero weather after extinguishing the fire. It was believed that spontaneous combustion of the silage caused the fire.
Bryce Cooper and Preston Warren both iced a pair of goals while Jake Dykhoff and Max Phillips combined for seven assists Friday in a 6-1 victory over Bottineau. The victory gave the Wolverines second place in the Wadena-Deer Creek Holiday Hockey Tournament behind Breckenridge-Wahpeton. Cooper started the scoring in the second period with back-to-back power play goals. Nolan Killian, Preston Warren and Andrew Sundby added solo goals for a 5-0 lead. Dykhoff and Phillips both ended the first period with three assists apiece.
A westbound Suzuki SUV ended up in the median on Highway 10 Tuesday afternoon west of Aldrich. The adult driver, who lost control of her vehicle on an icy stretch of road, escaped the rollover unharmed. Members of the Verndale Fire Department, Verndale Police Department, the Staples-Motley Police Department, the Wadena County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene.
The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels earned their first Class AA state volleyball tournament berth since 2007 Saturday night as they defeated Wadena-Deer Creek 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 for the Section 8AA championship. Squaring off for the second time this season, the Rebels and the Wolverines slugged it out on the Pelican Rapids High School court for the same 3-0 verdict that DGF claimed in the first meeting. Faith Anderson was DGF’s kill leader with 19. Sofina Reno and Jena Jacobson combined for 29 assists.
Kyler Newman scored a pair of touchdowns as Hillcrest handed Verndale a 20-14 defeat Friday in the Section, Class Nine-man championship game at the Fargodome.

Tori Ehlert has been doing a lot of teaching as she prepares her new basketball team for Tuesday night’s season opener at Staples. “The team has showed up for the last two weeks and has given their best effort,” Ehlert said. “There has been a lot of teaching.” In addition to working on their communication skills, the Wolverines have been focusing on being competitive on the defensive end of the court.
