Wolverines wrap up regular season with 9-5 victory

Steph Perkins fought off control problems on a cold and blustery May afternoon to lead the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines to a 9-5 victory over Pelican Rapids.

Steph Perkins fought off control problems on a cold and blustery May afternoon to lead the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines to a 9-5 victory over Pelican Rapids.

Perkins issued six walks but fanned nine to gain the pitching victory. The senior standout scored twice and went 3-for-5 at the plate. Megan Schmidt backed up her classmate by going 2-for-4 with a double and three ribbies.

The victory was the 11th straight for Craig Klawitter's Mid-State Conference champions and their 16th in 17 games.

Amy Field had two hits for the Vikings.

Kaitlin Sillerud walked four and fanned four in suffering the pitching loss.

The Wolverines ran their win streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep of Detroit Lakes Thursday at the WDC diamond.

Steph Perkins struck out 12 batters in the opener. Megan Schmidt, Kendra Grothmann and Sam Holweger all laced triples.

Grothmann punched a two-run homer to give the Wolverines a quick start in Game 2. The senior star finished the game with three RBIs. Cecelia Sakry tripled in three runs for WDC.

Steph Hahn was credited with the victory in the six-inning game.

The sweep gave the Wolverines a perfect 12-0 record in Mid-State play.
