Wolverines off to great start on court

The state-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines flashed some of their excellent depth Tuesday night as they swept Thief River Falls 25-16, 25-19, 25-6.

The state-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines flashed some of their excellent depth Tuesday night as they swept Thief River Falls 25-16, 25-19, 25-6.

The defending section champions were led by Brittney Noon's 14 kills and Hope Theisen's 23 for 24 serving effort, that included three ace serves. Rachel Craig was a defensive stalwart with nine blocked shots. Courtney Volkmann dished out 30 assists and had three ace serves while sister Caitlin had seven digs and was 18 of 18 at the serving line.

The Wolverines will host Pelican Rapids Tuesday and Detroit Lakes Thursday before heading to the Sauk Rapids Invitational Saturday.

The Wolverines opened their season on a winning note as they swept Mid-State Conference foe Crosby-Ironton.

The Wolverines, who qualified for the tournament last fall for the first time since the 1992 season, threw a balanced net attack at the Rangers. Kelsi Crawford and Brittney Noon tied for kill honors with eight while Rachael Carlisle, Rachel Craig and Kelly DeFoe combined for 16.

Carlisle and DeFoe combined for nine blocks while Craig recorded eight. Courtney Volkmann led the team with 24 assists. Mandy Perkins, Caitlin Volkmann and Hope Theisen combined for 36 digs.
