Wolverines bow to Braves after topping Panthers

Keith Ferris saw his Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines shoot a cool 22 percent from the field on the Menahga court Monday night in a 64-45 loss to the Braves.

Coming off a 70-55 victory last Thursday over Park Rapids, the Wolverines kept the
game close for most of the first half until an eight-point run gave the Braves
a 21-12 lead with just under six minutes to go. The Wolverines had a
seven-minute stretch where they converted on just two free throw attempts.
Menahga went into the half leading 31-19.

Jennifer Craig closed the gap to 10 points at the 14:51 mark of the second half. The Braves zoomed to a 55-33 lead with 5:50 left on a pair of free throws by Hannah Allebach.

Allebach led all scorers with 21 points. Danielle Novak backed her up with 14 tallies.

Craig paced the Wolverines with 17 points. Hope Theisen and Casey Volkmann added 10 apiece. The Wolverines had a rough night shooting three-point shots with Volkmann canning the only trey out of 14 attempts.

Theisen also recorded seven steals and six assists.

The Wolverines, now 3-18 overall, will host Frazee Friday in their regular season finale.

WDC 70, Park Rapids 55

Hope Theisen's double-double was the catalyst for Wadena-Deer Creek's first Mid-State Conference win Thursday night as the Wolverines defeated Park Rapids.

Theisen went 8-for-14 from the field and canned all eight of her free throws en route to a game-high 28-point night. The senior standout made it a double-double by hauling down 14 of WDC's 31 boards.

Theisen also led the Wolverines with six assists and four steals.

Theisen was on fire in the first half scoring 21 of WDC's 44 points. Leading by 13 at the midway point, the Wolverines went into scoring slump early in the second half. Jennifer Craig put the first two points of the second half on the scoreboard at the 16:41 mark but six minutes ticked off the clock before the Wolverines scored again.

The Panthers closed the gap to three, 46-43, on a field goal by Katie Klein at the 11:45 mark, but never got any closer. Craig scored 10 of WDC's 26 second half points and finished the game with 22 tallies. Craig made seven field goals and went 8-of-12 at the foul line.

Rylie Langer and Casey Volkmann rounded out WDC's scoring. Langer canned 13 points and Volkmann scored seven. The Wolverines were 23 of 32 at the free throw line for a 71 percent clip and canned seven of 16 three-pointers for a 43 percent average.

Gabie Johnson led the Panthers with 17 points. Klein finished the night with 16 tallies and Charity Ridlon scored 11.

The win gave the Wolverines a 1-9 record in conference play and a 3-17 mark overall. The Wolverines will travel to Sebeka Tuesday for a non-conference tilt. The Panthers dropped to 9-13 overall and 1-8 in the conference.
