When it comes to youth volunteering their time to help others in need, the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverine wrestling program is a shining example.
Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverine wrestlers and coaches lent a helping hand when Borealis Books, in downtown Wadena, sustained water damage on Feb. 9.
WDC wrestling assistant coach Curt Leeseberg, who owns Main Street Sports across from the book store, heard about the damage and knew they needed help. Leeseberg and WDC head wrestling coach Norm Gallant talked about what they could do.
"We decided it was the right thing to do, to help someone in need," said Gallant, who teaches that same philosophy in wrestling, as well as in his sixth-grade classroom at WDC Elementary.
Gallant, Leeseberg, and students Dylan Anderson, Tristian Baker, Nolan Johnson and Isaac Lustila volunteered to help clean out the store and move books and other items to the Mall of Wadena and the Methodist Church.

"It was great for the boys to help," said Gallant. "They are awesome kids."
