WDC girls trip state-ranked Vikings 62-57

Caitlin Volkmann hit four treys on an 18-point scoring night and Emily Miron came up with a double-double as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines topped the state-ranked Pelican Rapids 62-57 in their final game before the Christmas break.

Caitlin Volkmann hit four treys on an 18-point scoring night and Emily Miron came up with a double-double as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines topped the state-ranked Pelican Rapids 62-57 in their final game before the Christmas break.

The Vikings entered Tuesday's tilt ranked No. 9 in the Class AA state basketball poll.

"Pelican is a very good team," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said in praising the Vikings. "The win was definitely a team effort. It was nice to see the girls come together in a tight game."

Miron netted 14 points and collected 11 rebounds in the post. Miron also cam up big defensively with six blocks. Hope Theisen dropped in a pair of treys in a 13-point scoring night.

Bailey Strand scored 21 points for the Vikings. Erika Morgan tacked up 11.

Emily Miron had a career night scoring 46 points as the Wolverines trounced the Braves Thursday in Menahga.

Miron tacked up 18 field goals, went eight of nine at the foul line, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked eight shots.

"She was having one of those special nights," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said. "Menahga couldn't stop her and we kept feeding her the ball. She went up strong and played just a fantastic game."

The school scoring record of 51 belongs to Rhonda Birch who set the mark Feb. 16, 1993 in an 80-79 loss to Frazee.

Avery Jackson pumped in 13 points for the Wolverines while Caitlin Volkmann canned 10.

The Wolverines shot an excellent 86 percent at the foul line making 19 of 22 shots. WDC was 29 of 57 from the field for 51 percent.

Volkmann and Hope Theisen combined for 11 assists.
