Mirjana Ganley tallied 18 digs and Mariah Rickard collected 17 digs for Pequot Lakes as they beat Wadena-Deer Creek in straight sets Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Pequot Lakes coach Chris Ganley was impressed by her team’s defense lead by Ganley and Rickard giving the Patriots their second win of the season.

“We knew they had some explosive hitters on Wadena-Deer Creek so we had to block their big hitters,” Ganley said.

WDC got off to a slow start in their first game of the season. Mackenzie Carsten set up her teammates well netting 22 set assists for the Wolverines. Kennedy Gravelle, who was one of the key hitters Ganley was worried about, spiked 10 kills. Katelyn Gardner also smashed six kills, but it was not enough to combat the Patriots’ defense.

“We did not come out ready to play today,” Wadena-Deer Creek coach Sue Volkmann said. “It’s our first game and we got a lot of young kids so we will get better with each game.”

In the first set with Phoebe Glenn serving, the Patriots busted out a 5-0 run leading to an 18-10 lead. Pequot won the first set 25-15.

In the second set with Mirjana Ganley serving, the Patriots again used a 9-0 run to build 16-7 lead. The Wolverines had a late rally, but fell 25-13.

In the third set with libaro Mariah Rickard serving, the Patriots put the game out of reach for the Wolverines with a 6-0 run. The Wolverines showed some fight cutting the lead down to four in the third set. But another late run by the Patriots sealed the game as they won 25-17.

“All the players play really well,” Chris Ganley said. “But I really liked Mirjana (Ganley) who dug some hard hits and Mariah they had some great defensive plays that helped us stay alive when their hitters were swinging really hard at us.”

Mirjana Ganley also added three ace serves to her defensive effort. Glenn led the Patriots with 16 set assists and Kate Bolz-Andolshek smashed 12 kills.

Courtny Warren led the defensive effort for the Wolverines recording nine digs followed by Madison Carson who had seven digs.

The win moves Pequot Lakes to 2-0 on the season.

“We need to be able to have a faster offense,” Chris Ganley said. “At times we still are setting really high and some of the teams we play like Park Rapids run a way faster offense.”

Volkmann can point to a lot of things W-DC will need to improve.

“We did not serve well and when you can’t serve well you just can’t run on offense,” Volkmann said.
