Wadena-Deer Creek takes Park Region Conference opener

The Wadena-Deer Creek volleyball team rebounded from its first loss with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-12 victory over the Bertha-Hewitt Bears in Wadena on Sept. 6.

“We knew they have been down a bit and coming off our last game, we played a little slow, but it was good enough to win,” Wadena-DC head coach Sue Volkmann said. “We did get to work on somethings that we have been trying to work on in practice and it’s good to do it against other competition, so that really helps.”

Kennedy Gravelle led the attack with 12 kills, while Madison Carsten and Ashley Adams finished with seven kills. Adams dished out 17 set assists and delivered a team high with four ace serves.

The Wolverines started slowly in the first set, but took control when both teams were tied at nine. The Wolverines scored 16 of the final 19 points. Gravelle served out the final four points, which started with an ace. Carsten had a kill during the run and Gravelle closed the win with a kill.

There were no slow starts for the Wolverines in the second and third sets. They overpowered the Bears from the opening serve of each set. They raced out to a 7-2 lead in the second set and closed with a pair of ace serves from Adams to win the second set 25-14.

Adams started the third set the way she ended the second by dropping in back-to-back ace serves. The Wolverines built up a 10-2 lead with a pair of long service runs from Adams and Kyla Ness. Ness dropped in an ace serve after a pair of Gravelle kills, which gave Wadena-DC a commanding 10-2 lead. The Wolverines coasted from their, closing out the final set 25-12.

The Wolverines improve their season mark to 3-1 overall and head to Sauk Rapids-Rice for a tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8, beginning at 9 a.m.
