Verndale stifles Wadena-DC

The Verndale Pirates used a stifling defense and a big night from Morgan Glenz as they picked up a 43-31 Park Region Conference victory over Wadena-Deer Creek on Dec. 4 in Wadena.

The Verndale Pirates used a stifling defense and a big night from Morgan Glenz as they picked up a 43-31 Park Region Conference victory over Wadena-Deer Creek on Dec. 4 in Wadena.

Glens led all scorers with 17 points. She scored 12 of her 17 in the second half, helping the Pirates pull away in the second half.

Verndale maintained a 16-13 lead after the first half and added to its lead in the second half by outscoring the host Wolverines by nine points.

Mardi Ehrmantraut added 12 points, with nine of them coming in the second half. The Pirates were able to close out the Wolverines despite their struggles from the free throw line. Verndale hit just nine of its 23 attempts. Glenz scored eight of her 17 points at the line, with her shooting 8 of 15 at the charity stripe in the second half.

Kennedy Gravelle led the way for the Wolverines. She finished with 13 points. Mackenzie Carsten added eight in the defeat.

The Wolverines sit at 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Park Region Conference. Verndale moves to 2-0 and 1-0 in the Park Region Conference. Next action for the Pirates is Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. against Sebeka in New York Mills. The Wolverines take on Parkers Prairie on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Parkers Prairie. The Wolverines will play on Dec. 8 at 6:15 p.m. against New York Mills as well during the Park Region Conference Showcase.
