Wadena-DC boys follow up True Team win with conference win

It was a great tune-up for the Wadena-Deer Creek boys track and field team when they secured the Park Region Conference Championship on May 15.

The Wolverines edged out Ottertail Central for the title as they prepare to make their third straight appearance at the Class A True Team State Championships in Stillwater on May 18.

The Wolverines finished with 171.50 points, while Ottertail Central came in second with 136 points. Pillager was third with 103.50, while Pine River-Backus was fourth followed by Parkers Prairie in fifth.

Wadena-Deer Creek had a wide variety of finishes throughout the meet with most of them coming at or near the top of the field.

The Wolverines claimed the top three spots in the pole vault, securing big points toward the team’s final score. Cody Wheeler finished first when he cleared 11 feet, four inches, while Brady Domier was second with a vault of 10 feet, 10 inches. Charlie Bushinger was third with a vault of 10 feet, four inches, rounding out the top three Wolverines.

Cooper Folkestad took first in the shot put. He had the winning put of 51 feet, 11 inches. He captured second as well in the discus for Wadena-DC.

On the track, Bereket Loer ran out in front of the 400m dash. He finished with a time of 52.21 seconds. Nathaniel Bervig captured the 3200m run with a time of 10 minutes, 40.99 seconds.

The 1600m relay team finished first at 3:39.99 which was ran by Cole Dunker, Lucas Hinojos, Dawson Lupkes and Loer.

Wyatt Peterson earned a pair of second place finishes in the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles for Wadena-DC.

The 400m relay team of Lupkes, Peterson, Cade Kapphahn and Hunter Hawkins came in second, while the 800m relay team of Isaac Hale, Lupkes, Kapphahn and Hawkins came in second as well.

Hinojos earned a runner up finish in the 800m and 1600m run.

The Wolverines will compete in the Class A True Team Meet which begins at 10:45 a.m. on May 18 in Stillwater, Minn.

 Groth is a Minnesota Newspaper Association award-winning Sports Editor of the Perham Focus and the Wadena Pioneer Journal.
