Wolverines finish second at Park Region Conference meet

In their final regular season tune-up, the Wadena-Deer Creek girls track and field team finished second at the Park Region Conference meet in Wadena on May 17.

The Wolverines are now gearing up for the Section 6A subsectional event which will be held in Perham on May 24 at 4 p.m.

The Wolverines finished second to the Pillager Huskies, who won the event with 143 points. The Wolverines came in second with 115 points, while Ottertail Central finished with 100 points. United North Central was fourth, followed by Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale.

Mikaela Malone continued her dominance in the sprint events. She ran away from the field, earning first place honors in the 100m dash. She finished first with a time of 12.87 seconds.

While Malone took home top honors in the sprint race, it was Kennedy Gravelle doing the same in the distance event. Gravelle finished first in the 3200m run for Wadena-DC when she crossed the line at 12 minutes and 54.81 seconds.

Malone helped lead a pair of relay teams to first place finishes as well. She ran the opening leg of the 400m relay and was joined by McKenna Wangsness, Madison Packer and Ellie Miron as they finished with a time of 53.23 seconds. Malone ran the first leg of the 800m run, helping the Wolverines to another first place finish. She was joined by Wangsness, Bel Snyder and Miron as they finished with a time of 1:51.81.

Miron added a pair of wins in the field events. She had the top throws in the shot put and the discus event. The Wolverines finished one-and-two in the shot put and the discus. Miron won the shot with a toss of 36 feet, .5 inches. She had a throw of 120 feet, 1.50 inches in the discus for first place honors.

Leah Spillman finished second behind Miron in the shot put. She finished with a toss of 28 feet, two inches. Gravelle was second in the discus with her throw of 104 feet, 8.5 inches.

Jason Groth

 Groth is a Minnesota Newspaper Association award-winning Sports Editor of the Perham Focus and the Wadena Pioneer Journal. Groth worked in Grand Rapids as the Sports Director at KOZY/KMFY radio for two years and prior to that he was the Sports Editor/Writer for the Grand Rapids Herald-Review for seven years.
