Wadena-DC boys at the top of the Park Region Conference

It was a windy afternoon but that could not slow down the Wadena-Deer Creek boys track and field team as they captured the Park Region Conference title at the Wadena-Deer Creek Track and Field on May 17.

The Wolverines finished with 194 points, running away with the team title. Ottertail Central was second with 135 points, while Pillager followed in fourth with 160 points. Pine River/Backus rounded out the top five with 42 points.

It was a perfect tune-up for the Wolverines as they prepare to close the season with a pair of big meets. The Wolverines will travel to Stillwater, Minn., on May 19 for the Class A True Team Championships, before getting ready for the Section 6A Subsection events in Perham on May 24.

The Wolverines received several top performances helping them to the title. They excelled on the track events as well on the field events, cruising to the title.

Bereket Loer was a double winner for the Wolverines. He finished first in the 200 meter dash and the 400m dash. He earned a time of 23.05 in the 200m dash and 51.53 in the 400m dash.

Chase Domier was an individual winner in the 100m dash at 11.29. Lucas Hinojos came in first in the 1600m run at four minutes and 54.70 seconds.

The Wolverines captured one of the four relay races with the team of Jonathan Pantages, Hinojos, Hunter Hawkins and Domier taking top honors in the 1600m event at 3:36.21.

Pantages added to his win totals in the field events. He earned a pair of wins in the jumping contest. He won the high jump and the long jump. Pantages was first in the high jump, clearing the bar at six feet, four inches. He launched himself 19 feet, 8.75 inches to win the long jump event.

Cody Wheeler earned top honors in the pole vault. He cleared the bar with a vault of 12 feet, three inches to become conference champion.

Hinojos earned second place honors in the 800m run, while Wyatt Peterson was second in the 300m hurdles. The 800m relay team of Loer, Domier, Isaac Hale and Owen Guo took home second place and the 3200m relay team of Mason Evans, Jayson Young, Jacopo Della Latta and Joshua Tabery did as well. Cooper Folkestad came in second place in the shot put, while Lucas Doyle was second in the discus.

Pantages earned a third place finish as well in the 100m dash, while Peterson was third in the 110m hurdles. The 400m relay team of Cameron Pearson, Isaac Hale, Guo and Peterson took home third place honors as well. Steven Erkenbrack earned a pair of third place finishes in the shot put and the discus.

Jason Groth

 Groth is a Minnesota Newspaper Association award-winning Sports Editor of the Perham Focus and the Wadena Pioneer Journal.
