Wadena-DC boys run away from the field, capture 6A True Team title
The Wadena-Deer Creek boys track and field team showed they were the top of the field when the dominated the Section 6A True Team Championships in Pelican Rapids on May 10. The Wolverines won the event by 104.5 points, cruising to the Class A True Team Championships in Stillwater, Minn., on May 18 and 19.
The Wolverines finished the event with 844 points for top honors, while Frazee was second with 739.5 points. Osakis came in third with 722 points, while Staples-Motley was fourth and Ottertail Central came in fifth.
“We knew we had a solid team from the hurdles and running events to the jumps and the throws,” Wadena-Deer Creek head coach Marc Reynolds said. “But, in a meet like this, everyone has to show up and have a solid outing, and our boys did just that. We were solid in every aspect for a true team meet.”
The true team event is on the only event during the season where the competitors in each event earn points towards the team’s final score. Each event has two individuals and the relays have one relay team competing. The Wolverines scored big points across the board, with several wins and top five finishes.
“I thought our boys 3200-meter relay team set the tone for our team yesterday,” Reynolds said. “All four of those boys went out and ran their best relay splits of the season. Starting the meet off with a second place finish in that race was a great start for our team.”
Jonathan Pantages earned first place honors in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 3.75 inches. Hunter Hawkins came in first in the 400m dash, finishing with a time of 52.39 seconds. The 800m relay team of Bereket Loer, Chase Domier, Isaac Hale and Wyatt Peterson came in at 45.17 for first place, while the 1600m relay team of Pantages, Lucas Hinojos, Hunter Hawkins and Mason Evans came in at 3:38.62.
The 3200m relay team that started the day came in with a time of eight minutes and 53.44 seconds. It was run by the group of Evans, Jayson Young, Della Latta and Josh Tabery. It set the tone and was one of the many second place finishes for the Wolverines.
Loer was second in the in the 200m dash and the 400m dash. He finished behind Hawkins in the 400m dash, scoring big points for Wadena-DC.
Pantages was second in the 100m dash and the high jump. Hawkins came in second in the triple jump and finished in third in the long jump. Lucas Doyle was third in the discus, while Hinojos took third in the 1600m run. Chase Domier came in third place in the 100m dash.
The Wolverines have their sights set on the Class A True Team Championships which will take place in Stillwater.
“As a whole, I couldn’t be more proud of this group of kids,” Reynolds said. “They have been so fun to watch this year and love their dedication to the team and trying to score as many points as possible. I think we will be very competitive down at the State True Team Meet and look forward to seeing our kids put it on the line.”
The Class A Championships begin at 10 a.m. with the field events, while the track events begin at 10:15 am. On May 19.
