Third period burst helps Lake of the Woods over Wadena-DC

The Lake of the Woods Bears scored three straight goals in the third period and held off Wadena-Deer Creek in the closing seconds of the third period to earn a 4-3 non-conference boys hockey victory on Dec. 7 at the Wadena Ice Arena.

Jackson LeBrasseur scored two third period goals, including a short-handed goal which held up as the game-winning goal for the Bears. Blake Ferris and Kajun Krause added goals as well for the Bears, cancelling out a strong effort from the Wolverines top line of Max Phillips, Colby Schertler and Lleyten Pettit.

Phillips scored two second period goals, including one which was an incredible individual effort, while Pettit added a third period power play goal in a scrum.

Krause started the scoring in the first period for the Bears when he took a feed from Anson Haack and fired it past Josh Dykhoff.

The Wolverines came back with a pair of second period goals from Phillips. Phillips broke into the slot and took a feed from Schertler and fired it home to tie the game at one. Wyatt Murray assisted on the goal as well.

Phillips gave the Wolverines the lead with his second goal of the game. He beat goalie Aidan Tom to the sideboards with a diving effort and sent the puck into the net. Pettit and Schertler assisted on the goal.

However, the momentum shifted early in the third period and the Bears took advantage. LeBrasseur tied it and eventually scored the game-winning goal, which sandwiched a goal by Ferris.

The Wolverines battled to within a goal when Pettit managed to slide a puck past Tom amongst a large scrum in front of the net. However, the Wolverines were unable to get the equalizer in the closing seconds of the third period.

Tom finished with 26 saves on 29 shots. He stopped 17 of 18 in the third period to preserve the lead for the Bears.

Dykhoff finished the game with 19 saves on 23 shots in the loss for Wadena-DC.

The Wolverines are now 3-3-0 on the season and returned to action with a conference tilt with Northern Lakes on Dec. 11. They return home for a contest with Park Rapids Area on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
