The Wadena-Deer Creek girls tennis team opened the new season with the annual Park Rapids Area Invitational on Aug. 17 in Park Rapids Area. The tournament featured several strong teams such as East Grand Forks, Minnewaska Area, Moorhead, Roseau and Perham/New York Mills, along with the host Park Rapids Area.

The Wolverines captured a third place finish at No. 2 singles behind the play of Corra Endres and captured fourth place honors at No. 1 singles with the play of Madison Packer. The No. 3 doubles team captured fourth place honors as well.

Packer opened with a win over Park Rapids Area's Rachael Herman 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round. However, she was edged out by Fergus Falls' Ellie Colbeck 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. Perham/NYM's Jade Lenius was victorious over Packer in the third place contest. Lenius picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Packer.

Endres opened the tournament with a 3-6, 6-3 and 10-8 victory over Moorhead's Anna Korsmo. She was defeated in the semifinals by Minnewaska Area's Alissa Thorfinnson in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Endres responded with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Park Rapids Area's Jada Renneberg in the third place match.

Genevieve Pinnella and Kelly Muckala competed at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. However, they were winless on the afternoon. Pinella went to the wire in the seventh place match when she was edged out by East Grand Forks' Thea Haaven-Farstad 5-7, 6-2 and 10-8.

Libby Hartman and Katie Fiemeyer started the first round at No. 3 doubles when they defeated Park Rapids Area's Destiny Villarreal and Taylor Dravis 6-2, 6-2. The team of Kenady Burris and Hanah Jensen-Selnes of East Grand Forks defeated Hartman and Isabel Ellingson in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Perham's LaVonne Lindberg and Maggie Trites came in third with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Hartman and Nevada Schulz.

The doubles teams of Kayla Meeks and Madelyn Gallant were winless at No. 2 doubles, while the team of Kaylee Ova and Ashley Peterson were winless at No. 1 doubles.

The Wolverines return to action with the annual Highway 10 Tournament at the tennis courts in Wadena-Deer Creek and Staples-Motley. The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m., on Aug. 21
