Wolverines rally for come-from-behind win
With the first pitch temperature at 40 degrees, the cold weather didn’t slow down the hot bats at the Wadena Junior Varsity softball field on April 4 during the Wolverines home opener. The Wolverines used a seven-run fifth inning to pull out an 11-8 season-opening victory over the Pillager Huskies.
The Wolverines roped out 10 hits and capitalized on four Pillager errors in the victory, but it was the seven run inning which helped the Wolverines bust out of a 7-4 deficit.
The Wolverines jump ahead in the second inning with three runs. Laura Krause walked, which was followed by a walk to Hailey Wiederich. Madison Carsten followed with an RBI single, which allowed Krause to score and Myja Nemeth followed with a line drive, two-run double to make it 3-0.
However, the Huskies answered with three runs in the fourth and fourth in the fifth to take the 7-4 lead, after Wadena-DC scratched a run across in the fourth.
Mackenzie Carsten started the inning with a single and moved up when Krause reached on an error. Nevada Schulz and Wiederich reached base on fielder’s choices, with Schulz bringing in a run. The next six batters roped singles with Madison Carsten driving in a run, Nemeth driving in two, Mercedes Schulz plating one and Courtny Warren driving in a run. Kyla Ness and Mackenzie Carsten had hits during the string as well.
The Huskies were able to get a run back in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wolverines in their home-opener.
Madison Carsten, Mackenzie Carsten, Myja Nemeth and Mercedes Schulz had two hits each in the win. Nemeth drove in five runs, while Madison Carsten drove in two. Warren and Ness added a hit each.
Mackenzie Carsten picked up the win in the circle. She allowed eight runs on 13 hits. She struck out two and walked two.
The Wolverines return to action on April 5 when they take on Sebeka. The game was originally scheduled for Sebeka, but has been moved to Wadena due to having a playable field. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Wadena JV softball field.
