Wolverines earn split with Pillager

Mackenzie Carsten helped the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines to a split with the Pillager Huskies on May 14 in Wadena. Carsten shut down the Huskies in game one, helping the Wolverines to a 9-2 victory. However, Pillager gained a measure of revenge with a 2-1 win in extra innings in game two.

The Wolverines used a balanced attack in game one. Courtny Warren, Casey Volkmann and Carsten had two hits each in the game. Carsten drove in four runs and connected for a pair of doubles. Alex Kahl drove in two runs as well, while Lila Lohmiller and Volkmann had RBIs in the win.

Carsten went the distance in the circle. She allowed two runs on four hits. She fanned seven batters, walked two and hit one.

Lohmiller, Kahl, Hailey Wiederich, Laura Krause and Nevada Schulz added hits as well.

Game two was tightly contested game with the Huskies earning the 2-1 victory in eight innings. The Wolverines found themselves down a run until the seventh inning when Amber Moen connected for an RBI single. It was one of her two hits in the game. Her single scored Lohmiller, who doubled to start the frame.

However, the Huskies would push a run across in the eighth, earning the walk-off victory.

Lohmiller, Wiederich and Schulz finished with hits in the game for Wadena-DC.

The Wolverines move their season mark to 7-8 overall and 6-6 in the Park Region Conference.
