Second half free throws help Crookston cagers top WDC

When the chips were down in the Section 8AA playoffs Thursday night the No. 7 Crookston Pirates came up big at the free throw line to defeat No. 10 Wadena-Deer Creek 61-47.

The Pirates, who had not enjoyed a great year at the free throw line, canned 11 of 13 foul shots down the stretch to keep Kevin Tumberg's Wolverines at bay.

The Pirates were solidly on top at the midway point with a 31-18 lead. The second half started well for the hometown Pirates but the Wolverines changed the tune with some good three-point shooting.

"We had a chance to open it up, it was 18 at one point," Crookston head coach Greg Garmen said. "Then Wadena hit three threes. We hit free throws at the end to seal it. It was timely free throwing shooting on our part."

Chris Wavra led the Pirates with 13 tallies. Patrick Deng and Matt Garmen also reached double figures with 11 points apiece.

"We came out and struggled a bit right away," Tumberg said. "It was disappointing as a whole because the mistakes we were making were not because of the Pirate defense, but because of our own wrong-doing. We definitely felt like we let the game slip away from us. You have to give Crookston credit because they were able to put together a complete game."

Alex Carlson was WDC's top gunner with 14 points. Tanner Horn and Dacotah Mittag combined for 17 tallies.

The loss brought down the final curtain on WDC's basketball season and Tumberg got a chance to reflect on the 2015-2016 season.

"I am extremely proud of all the WDC boys' basketball players as they have put in a ton of time and hard work this year to get us to the point we are at. We still have a long ways to go, but I firmly believe we have the right pieces in places the keep this train rolling in the right direction," he said.
