Raiders' Moore returning to state in discus

Samuel Moore won the Section 6A discus title for the second straight year last Thursday to punch his ticket for the Class A state track and field meet at Hamline University June 5-6.

Samuel Moore won the Section 6A discus title for the second straight year last Thursday to punch his ticket for the Class A state track and field meet at Hamline University June 5-6.

Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's star freshman sent the discus a distance of 147-4. He also came very close to qualifying in the shot put with a third place toss of 46-1.

Conditions last Thursday were not good for throwers according to BHV head coach Jeff Moore.

"He didn't have a really good day throwing. It was not a good day to throw up there. He was in that crosswind." Moore said.

The state meet could be an entirely different proposition depending on weather conditions.

"He's doing okay, he just needs some confidence in himself," Moore said.

Moore has seen his son throw the discus 159-6 this year. Only four Class A state discus qualifiers have better throws than that mark going into the state.

BHV's Rumor Stokes qualified for the section in four events but the senior standout was close to a state berth in only one event at the Minnesota State University-Moorhead complex Thursday, taking third in the triple jump with a leap of 34-9.

Courtney Templin was seventh for the Raiders in the 400 dash with a time of 1:05.48. Also placing seventh was the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 4x200 relay team with a time of 1:53.26.

The Perham boys won the Section 6A team title with 130 points. Otter Tail Central was second with 84. The BHV boys placed 12th with 16 points.

Pequot Lakes earned top honors in the Section 6A girls' field with 81 points. Morris/Chokio-Alberta was second with 77. The BHV girls tied Otter Tail Central for 19th place with six points.
