Puttonen joins Minnesota 4-H archers at national meet

Wadena County 4-H member Ethan Puttonen competed on the Minnesota Compound Archery Team in the National Shooting Sports meet June 24-28 at Grand Island, Neb.

The Sebeka archer joined a team that included Nick Kappers (Spring Valley), John Longholz (Lake Benton) and Mitchell Plaehn (Spring Valley).

The Minnesota team took an overall ranking of third in the nation. Minnesota has not had a Compound Archery team or archer place at the nationals in more than 10 years.

The team competed in three events -- the FITA round, the field course and a 3D course. Each course took 5-6 hours to complete followed by a practice round of 2-3 hours for the next day's event.

The team took an second overall on the FITA course. They also claimed fourth on the field course and eighth on the 3D course.

Puttonen was fifth in the FITA round. Kappers placed fourth in the FITA, third in the field round and 10th in the 3D round. Kappers also took the first place individual medal for his overall performance.
