WADENA — The Wadena-Deer Creek and Barnesville girls basketball teams both played as if the season hinged on a win in their matchup Thursday, Feb. 24.
The result was one great game for fans and players alike and an eventual win by the Wolverines 43-41. The back and forth action was strong throughout the entire game with WDC only earning a double-digit lead for a few seconds in the second half. That lead was led by a fantastic performance by Montana Carsten who piled on six three-point shots. She led with 20 points. Addyson Gravelle followed that with 11 points, including seven from the free-throw line. Lauryn Gravelle scored all nine of her points in the first half including a dandy of a three-point shot at the buzzer to go into halftime.
While just five Wolverines scored in the game it took a constant force of team members pulling down rebounds and being smart with the ball to hold off the Trojans. Barnesville only took a couple three-point shots otherwise they found their way down low when they could break through the Wolverines iron defense.
The teams were neck-and-neck going into the final seconds and it was a Madison Packer steal with just seconds left that helped earn them some time. The Wolverines rejoiced at the missed shot from Barnesville at the buzzer.
