Cross country: WDC girls finish first in Johanna Olson invite at Whitetail Run; boys claim fourth

The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country teams ran in the Johanna Olson Invitational at Whitetail Run Golf Course last Tuesday. The girls took first place while the boys finished fourth.

WADENA – The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country teams had a successful day in their home invite last Tuesday.

The WDC girls took first place at the Johanna Olson Invitational, beating Little Falls by three points with a team score of 54. Amber Collins, Britta Sweeny and Karly Haverkamp placed 5-7 to lift the Wolverines over seven other teams.

Collins clocked in at 22:18 in fifth place, followed by Sweeney with a time of 22:21. Haverkamp was 28 seconds behind Sweeney in seventh place.

Ally Pavek took 17th place with a time of 23:53. Brielle Kern rounded out the varsity scorers in 19th with a time of 23:53. Lydia Oldakowski (24:29, 21st) and Cambrie Geiger (28th, 25:24) also placed in the event.

United North Central finished behind Little Falls with a team score of 21. New York Mills (115) and Park Rapids (122) took fourth and fifth. WDC won its home invite for the second consecutive season.

In the boys standings, Park Rapids took first place with 30 points. The Panthers are the No. 1 ranked team in Class A and beat Little Falls by 30 points. Bertha-Hewitt finished third with a score of 68, while WDC took fourth with 162.

The Wolverines improved on their sixth-place finish from a year ago behind a 14th overall run from Phillip Ross. He clocked in at 19:31. Grant Nelson took 27th with a time of 21:50, while Trevin Kern finished 38th (23:14). Isaac Heppner (16:16, 40th), Diego Shaw (24:19, 43rd) and Tayton Lehmann (24:28, 46th) all finished in the top 50.

The Wolverines travel to Ada-Borup–West on Thursday.
