Cross country: WDC girls finish first at Ada-Borup, boys ninth

The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country teams ran in the Ada-Borup invite on Thursday. The girls took first place while the boys finished ninth.

ADA – The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country teams ran at the Ada-Borup invite last week.

The WDC girls took first place with a score of 57, beating out Hawley (62) and Hillsboro-Central Valley (66).

Britta Sweeny led the Wolverines. She took seventh place with a time of 21:01. Amber Collins was 13 seconds behind Sweeney with a time of 21:14. Lydia Oldakowski notched WDC’s third top-15 finish with a time of 21:33 (14th).

Brielle Kern (22:27, 25th), Ally Pavek (22:36) and Noelle Spicer (24:40) rounded out the group for the WDC girls.

The boys took ninth place with a score of 229. Lane Hoefs clocked in the fastest time for the boys at 17:34, which was good for 17th place. Phillip Ross trailed by just under a minute with a time of 18:27 in 35th place.


Grant Nelson was hot on Ross’ tail. He finished with a time of 18:32, good enough for a 37th-place finish. Cooper Dalmo (20:35, 77th), Trevin Kern (21:03, 83rd), (Tayton Lehmann, 21:50) and Blake Haverkamp (21:59, 97th) also completed the race.

Park Rapids had the best collection of times with a team score of 48. Hillsboro-Central Valley (103) and Hawley (114) locked in the top three.

Sue Volkmann will go for her 600th career victory as head volleyball coach on Thursday when the Wolverines travel to Bertha-Hewitt. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Wolverines are on a five-match winning streak, including last Thursday's 3-0 win over Menahga to secure Volkmann's 599th win.
