Cross country: Wadena-Deer Creeks sweeps New York Mills invite

The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country teams swept the New York Mills invite last week in dominating fashion.

NEW YORK MILLS – The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country teams swept the New York Mills invite last week.

The WDC girls finished in six of the top eight spots to beat New York Mills and Ada-Borup-West with a team score of 18. Amber Collins (22:08, 2nd), Britta Sweeney (22:16.59, 3rd) and Karly Haverkamp (22:30.93, 5th) collected top-five finishes.

Ally Pavek (23:29.28), Lydia Oldakowski (24:17.40) and Brielle Kern (24:50.75) finished consecutively after Haverkamp. Cambrie Geiger clocked in at 25:56.00 to round out the Wolverines in 12th.

Lane Hoefs won the boys race, pacing the WDC runners with a time of 18:09.18. Phillip Ross took third place with a time of 19:42.56, while Grant Nelson finished in fifth (20::40.53). Trevin Kern (22:16.64) and Tayton Lehmann (22:51.50) completed varsity scoring for the Wolverines.

The WDC boys took first place with a team score of 35, beating out Ottertail Central by seven points.
