Cross country: Wadena-Deer Creek girls take third, boys eighth at Brave Like Gabe invite in Perham

The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country teams competed in the Brave Like Gabe invite on Saturday at Arvig Park in Perham.

PERHAM – The Wadena-Deer Creek cross country season kicked off on Friday at the third annual Brave Like Gabe invitational in Perham at Arvig Park.

The WDC girls took third place with a team score of 132. The Wolverines were led by Britta Sweeney, who took 18th place with a time of 21:41.234. Amber Collins (21:52.209, 19th) and Karly Haverkamp (21:53.245, 20th) finished right behind Sweeney.

Ally Pavek took 40th place with a time of 22:57.350, while Lydia Oldakowski rounded out the varsity point scorers at 23:02.203 in 42nd place. Cambrie Geiger (26:42.738) and Noelle Spicer (27:06.187) also finished for the Wolverines.

Perham took home the top spot with a team score of 41. Moorhead edged out WDC with a score of 78 for second place. Pequot Lakes' Calia Chaney ran the fastest time in 19:26.135, followed by Bemidji's Mia Hoffman (19:29.164) and United North Central's Anjalie Aho (20:27.156).

The WDC boys took eighth place with a score of 203. Fargo North claimed the top spot with 56 points, followed by Bemidji (69) and Perham (103).

Bjorn Bunsberg turned in the fastest time for the Wolverines at 17:54.479, which put him in 17th place. Lane Hoefs wasn't far behind in 20th place with a time of 18:03.131.

Phillip Ross (19:41.140, 45th), Grant Nelson (19:48.164, 50th), Diego Shaw (23:54.209, 90th) and Tayton Lehmann (23:55.116, 91st) also clocked varsity times.

Fargo North's Owen Sondag ran the fastest time at 16:34.351, followed by Bemidjis's Carson Maish at 16:40.112.
