Pirates sweep Wildcats, take second at Bertha-Hewitt

Shelley Glenz saw her Pirates improve to 13-6-4 Tuesday with a 25-11, 25-5, 25-4 sweep of Laporte on the Verndale court.

The Pirates have not lost a match at home since Sept. 20 and are in third place in the Park Region Conference behind Henning and Sebeka.

Teresa Moenkedick collected 20 kills and 13 digs in the win over Laporte.

Pirates second in Bertha-Hewitt Invitational

The Pirates earned two shots at invitational winner Bertha-Hewitt Saturday in taking second place on the Bears home court.

The Pirates lost their first match with the Bears in pool play 25-23, 25-18 and later found the Bears waiting for them in the championship where Bertha-Hewitt triumphed 25-16, 25-22. The Pirates won pool play matches with Eagle Valley 25-18, 25-19, Ashby 25-22, 25-16 and Brandon-Evansville 25-17, 25-22 and tied Pillager 17-25, 25-16.

Teresa Moenkedick led the Pirates with 99 digs and 49 kills. Sarah Moenkedick had 75 set assists. Elyssa Kern chalked up 8 ace serves.

"They've been playing with good chemistry," Verndale Head Coach Shelley Glenz said. "They pull together in those close games. That is their strength."
