ERSKINE, Minn. – Openings remain for the upcoming Mentored Youth Deer Hunt, set for Saturday, Oct. 29, and Sunday, Oct. 30, at Rydell National Wildlife Refuge.

In a news release, refuge staff on Monday, Sept. 19, said five unfilled spots remained after the original registration period, which ended Friday, Aug. 19. The hunt is open to as many as 15 young hunters.

The two-day hunt, which will be held on more than 1,800 acres of refuge land, is open to young hunters between the ages of 12 and 15 who have successfully completed firearms safety training. The only other requirements are that an adult mentor must accompany the youth hunter at all times, and both of them must attend a four-hour orientation session set for 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Rydell Refuge Visitor Center.

Anyone interested in signing up for one of the remaining openings in the special hunt should call Gregg Knutsen, Rydell Refuge manager, at (218) 686-4329 for information on how to get registered and purchase a license from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The Rydell youth deer hunt is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Minnesota DNR and the Friends of Rydell and Glacial Ridge Refuges Association. The objective of the hunt is to provide new or relatively inexperienced youth hunters a special opportunity to hunt deer under the guidance of an adult mentor.
