Forget about the days of randomly selecting a spot to drill on the ice and hope there are fish below.
In this episode of Northland Outdoors, host Chad Koel enlists the help of Steve Pennaz, a Minnesota fishing hall of famer, and his electronics to not only scope out a location on the lake, but fine tune that location.
Pennaz uses a Garmin Penoptix Livescope, a device that not only shows the lake contours and scope fish vertically but also in a 90-foot radius.
It took seven drilled holes but one thing Pennaz appreciates about his electronics is that it can also reflect the mood of the fish below.
"One of the things above Livescope is not that you catch more fish, but you actually see the fish respond to your presentations," Pennaz says.

Once Koel and Pennaz got dialed in, a school of crappies was below.
