The red-hot Henning Hornets made good on their final swipe at Park Region Conference champion Verndale Tuesday night by handing the Pirates a 55-43 loss in their regular season finale.
Ellie Dague pumped in 16 points while Courtney Dague and Paige Wallevand scored 14 each for the conference runner-ups, who won for the 11th time in 12 games. The Hornets shot 44 percent from the floor and netted 16 of their 23 free throw attempts for a 70 percent clip.
Shania Glenz was Verndale's top scorer with 13. Jordyn Glenz canned 11 points and Sarah Moenkedick chipped in with 10. The Pirates had a poor shooting night converting on only 27 percent of their field goal attempts. The Pirates were 0-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc.
The loss gave the Pirates a final conference mark of 11-2 and dropped their season log to 20-5. The Hornets climbed to 10-4 in the PRC and 18-7 overall.
On tap Thursday for the No. 2 Pirates will be a 7 p.m. Section 5A home game with either Pine River-Backus or Laporte. The winner of that game will face either No. 3 Sebeka or No. 6 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Saturday in a 7:45 p.m. game at a site to be determined. Cromwell and Browerville/Eagle Valley are the No. 1 ranked teams in the two halves of Section 5A.
