Wadena-DC strikes often in win over Breckenridge/Wahpeton

The top line of Lleyten Pettit, Colby Schertler and Max Phillips set the tone as the Wadena-Deer Creek boys hockey team picked up a convincing 6-3 victory over Breckenridge/Wahpeton on Nov. 27 at Sterns arena in Wahpeton, N.D.

The trio combined for 10 points with five goals and five assists in the season-opening win. The Wolverines scored two goals in each period and built up a big lead before the Blades tried to comeback with three in the third period.

Pettit recorded the hat-trick, while Schertler scored two goals and added two helpers. Max Phillips finished with three assists in the win.

Schertler and Pettit tallied in the first period with their goals coming 58 seconds a part in the period.

Pettit and Justin Dykhoff tallied in the second period, building the Wolverines lead up to 4-0. Dylan Ness and Kade Woods assisted on the goal by Dykhoff.

Breckenridge/Wahpeton found the net in the third period with three goals, two of them from Isaac Wohlers and the other from Jase Jensen. Pettit completed the hat-trick for the Wolverines in the third period, while Schertler sealed the win with an empty net tally in the closing minute of the game.

Noah Stevens stopped 10 of 13 shots to pick up the win for the Wolverines. Jared Aamold finished with 28 stops on 33 shots for the Blades.

The Wolverines will take to the road for a pair of games against Proctor and Ely on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
