Wolverines open Section 6A playoffs with familiar foe

The Wadena-Deer Creek boys hockey team will be at home for the first round of the Section 6A playoffs when they open on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Wadena Ice Arena.

The Wolverines (14-9-2) will open with a very familiar foe when they square off with Breckenridge/Wahpeton. The Wolverines swept the season series from the Blades, winning the first game 7-2 in Breckenridge, while besting the Blades 7-5 in Wadena.

The Wolverines closed the season with a 9-1 victory over Red Lake Falls, capping off their second winning season in 11 years.

Wadena-Deer Creek head coach Scott Woods said on the school’s facebook page that they are hoping to add some playoff wins to the final total. Woods went on to say, “The kids have been very coachable this year and they have worked hard.”

The Blades enter postseason with an 11-9-0 mark, closing the season with a 7-1 victory over Morris/Benson Area.

The Wolverines received the eighth seed, while Breckenridge/Wahpeton is the ninth seed in the field. The other play-in game will feature Prairie Centre hosting Morris/Benson Area.

The winner of the play-in games will advance to the Section 6A quarterfinals. The Wadena-DC/Breckenridge winner will take on the No. 1 seeded St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The other play-in game will take on the No. 2 seed, Sartell. Alexandria will host Fergus Falls, while River Lakes will travel to Little Falls in the other quarterfinal contests.
