The offensive woes continued for the Prairie Centre Blue Devils when they were edged out by the Minneapolis Blades 5-1 at the Parade Ice Arena in Minneapolis on Dec. 5 in girls hockey.

The Blue Devils are averaging just 1.86 goals per game and have scored just three goals in their four game losing streak, dropping their mark to 2-5-0 on the season.

Minneapolis’ Maddy Helmstetter tied for the team lead in scoring when she recorded the hat-trick, helping the Blades to the home win. Erica Lieske and Julia Stevens found the net as well for the Blades, who improved to 3-4-0 on the season, while snapping a three-game skid of its own.

Both teams were scoreless through a period of play, but the Blue Devils only mustered one shot on goal in the opening period.

While both teams ramped up the offensive pressure in the second period, it was the Blades who scored three times, taking control of the game.

Lieske, Helmstetter and Stevens gave the Blades a commanding 3-0 lead midway through the period. Gabby Olson answered for Prairie Centre when she scored an unassisted goal late in the period.

Yet, it was the Blades who continued to sustain pressure throughout the third period. Helmstetter tallied twice in the period, putting the game away for the home team and completing the hat-trick.

Isabelle Hovel finished with 26 saves on 31 shots in taking the loss for the Blue Devils. Ruby Sieger finished with 11 saves on 12 shots for Minneapolis in recording the win.

The Blue Devils sit at 2-5-0 and hope to snap their skid when they take on Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Dec. 7 in Detroit Lakes.
