Seniors Jake Goeden and Wesley Janson are back to lead a  veteran Wadena-Deer Creek club into the 2014 golf season.

Both upperclassmen have good leadership skills according to WDC golf coach Kevin Ross.

Goeden rates the top spot in the lineup after two solid seasons on the links. Ross is impressed with every aspect of his game.

“He just has a good work ethic,” Ross said. “He plays in the summer and shoots in the low 80s.”

Ross has another third year player in Janson and likes his short game.

“He’s probably our No. 2 guy,” Ross said. “He shoots in the upper 80s and low 90s.”

Junior Mathew Quincer gives the Wolverines a hard worker with a good long game.

Junior Wade Piper played both junior varsity and varsity golf for WDC last season.

Jordan Kern and Jack Goeden are two hard-working sophomores. Kern puts in extra time on his game in the summer. Goeden showed the most improvement of any golfer on the 2013 squad.

Eighth-graders Thomas Quincer and Joseph Baker will round out the team. Quincer has the same hard-working qualities his brother has shown.

“Our goal is to improve and hopefully get some all-conference and section qualifiers,” Ross said. “We made dramatic improvement from the start of last year to the finish.”

Ross tabs Detroit Lakes as the top team in the Mid-State with Staples-Motley also contending. The Wolverines join a new section this spring where Staples-Motley and St. Cloud Cathedral will be leading the hunt.
