After a weekend of scrimmages, the Wadena-Deer Creek football team will get its first chance to do it for real when they host the Staples-Motley Cardinals on Aug. 30 at the Wadena-Deer Creek Football Field.
The Wolverines will be seeking their fourth straight win against the Cardinals and their third straight regular season victory, dating back to last year. The Wolverines edged the Cardinals 24-18 in overtime last year.
First year head coach Kyle Petermeier said the opening weekend of scrimmages went well. It was the team's first opportunity to scrimmage live during the season. He added the team came out of them healthy with no long term injuries.
"We got see kids competing, and got a lot of film on our own guys," Petermeier said. "It gave us a good idea what we have going into the season."
The Wolverines expect to see a good quarterback and backfield from Staples-Motley, but don't know much else on the Cardinals since it is a new coaching staff in place. On defense, the Wolverines expect to see a physical and aggressive team.
Petermeier said their keys will be protecting the football and finishing their blocks. He said defensively, the Wolverines need to be sound.
"The point of attack has been good, but finishing through those blocks is important to us," Petermeier said. "We need to trust that each kid will do their job and not worry about doing someone else's. We also need to tackle as a team and make sure we get their backs to the ground."
The Cardinals finished the 2018 season with a 1-8 record with their lone win being a 34-14 victory over United North Central. The Wolverines defeated United North Central 34-6 last season.
The Wolverines return experience in a key spot with Payton Rondestvedt back at quarterback. Petermeier said he likes what the Wolverines have at that spot.
"As a sophomore, Payton understands the game of football," Petermeier said. "He's a great kid, works hard and leads by example."
Petermeier said the kids are excited and can't wait to get out on the field on Aug. 30 for the first game of the season.
