A deer hunter found the remains of an apparent suicide victim late Saturday afternoon in Wolf Lake Township, about 30 miles east of Detroit Lakes.
The remains are two to five years old and have not yet been positively identified, although authorities do have some idea who it might be, said Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon. The body is being sent to the Ramsey County Medical Office for an autopsy. Positive identification is expected to take two to three weeks.
The hunter found the body a ways off a footpath near a lake, Gordon said. Most people traveling in the area would have used the footpath and would have had no reason to traverse the area where the body was found.
The find was reported at 5:55 p.m. and the scene was secured, with the investigation continuing Sunday morning with the help of agents with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and their mobile lab.
"Physical and forensic evidence at the scene" clearly points to the victim being a man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected, Gordon said.
