Wadena-DC girls hoops top Frazee in overtime

A balanced attack and an offensive outburst in overtime helped the Wadena-Deer Creek girls basketball team to a 65-56 overtime victory over Frazee in Frazee on Feb. 9.

The Wolverines had three players finish in double figures with Kennedy Gravelle pacing the attack with 18 points. Ashley Adams finished with 15 points and Lauryn Gravelle added 13 in the win.

The Wolverines were 20 of 30 from the free throw line in the win, but hit 10 of their 12 attempts in overtime. Ten of their 15 points in overtime came from the free throw line. Adams hit one of her two 3-pointers in the extra session and Kennedy Gravelle hit a basket as well. Lauryn Gravelle was perfect from the line in overtime and Madison Carsten hit all four of her attempts.

Wadena-DC was out-scored in the first half, but out-scored Frazee in the second half 30-26. The Wolverines took control of the overtime session by out-scoring the Hornets by nine, 15-6.

Paige Oswald led the way for Frazee with 20 points. Ellie Rierson finished with 10 points as well.

The Wolverines improved to 6-15 with the victory. The Wolverines travel to Menahga on Feb. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. start, before closing out the season with a three-game homestand which begins on Feb. 15 against Sebeka.

Pine River/Backus vs. Wadena-DC

Pine River/Backus built up a big first half lead and added to it in the second half when it earned a 60-31 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek in a non-conference girls basketball game on Feb. 5 in Wadena.

Rylie Hirschey finished with 13 points, while Bailey Wynn finished with 12 points, while Gabby Rainwater added 10.

Kennedy Gravelle paced the Wolverines with 19 points and was the only player in double figures for Wadena-DC.

Pine River/Backus jumped ahead with a 31-16 first half lead and carried it into the second half by outscoring the Wolverines 29-15 in the second half.
