It was an old fashioned pitcher’s duel when Wadena-Deer Creek’s Payton Rondestvedt and New York Mills Derin Gaudette battled it out under the lights at Elmer Becker Field in Deer Creek on May 10.
Gaudette was effectively wild in picking up the 1-0 victory for New York Mills and handed Wadena-Deer Creek its first defeat of the season. Gaudette went six and 1/3 and allowed two hits. He struck out four and walked five batters. Logan Small recorded the final two outs with a pair of strikeouts for the save.
Gaudette scored the lone New York Mills run when he doubled and eventually scored on an error in the second inning. Gaudette had one of five hits for the Eagles in the win.
Facing the Eagles for the second time this year, Rondestvedt was strong but didn’t get any help from the offense. He went seven innings and allowed one unearned run. He struck out four and walked one.
Max Phillips and Rondestvedt had the only two hits in the game for Wadena-DC. The Wolverines had opportunities but couldn’t get the timely hit. They left two in scoring position in the first inning, one in the second inning and left the bases full in the fifth inning. The Wolverines had two on in the seventh but couldn’t push one across.
Caden Roberts, Small, Gaudette, Corey Roberts and Brady Bauck had hits in the game for the Eagles.
The Wolverines are now 13-1 overall and have a game edge on New York Mills for the Park Region Conference lead.
