The Park Rapids Area Panthers out-lasted the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines in an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel in Park Rapids on April 27. The Panthers earned a walk-off 1-0 victory over the Wolverines in a Section 8AA clash.

Will Pickar went the distance for host Panthers, allowing five hits. He was able to wiggle out of trouble at multiple points in the game. The Wolverines had opportunities in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings, but Pickar was able to close the door. Pickar struck out three and walked two on his way to the win.

Justin Dykhoff was just as strong for the Wolverines in his six innings of work. He allowed two hits, while walking four and fanning 10 batters. Dykhoff faced the minimum in the first three innings before giving up a walk and a single in the fourth. He was able to work his way out of that.

However, it was a throwing error in the seventh that proved costly, allowing Zach Hocking to score the game-winning run. Hocking singled to lead off the seventh and was sacrificed over to second. He came around to score on an errant throw, giving Park Rapids Area the win.

Max Phillips suffered the loss in relief. He allowed one unearned run on one hit. He struck out one as well.

Jake Dykhoff had two hits at the plate, including a double, while Noah Ross, Wyatt Hamann and Colby Schertler had single hits.

The Wolverines return to action with a doubleheader on April 27 when they host New York Mills at 4 p.m., which will be followed with a game against Staples-Motley.
