The Wadena-Deer Creek American Legion baseball team concluded its 2019 season with a 23-4 record overall and a fourth place finish at the Minnesota State Division II American Legion Baseball Tournament in Ely on Aug. 9-11.
Wadena-DC struggled to get the bats going after earning a 2-0 opening round win behind a complete game no-hitter from Justin Dykhoff in the opening around against BOLD. Wadena-DC was defeated by Plato 4-1 in the semifinals before falling to Caledonia 6-1 in the third place game.
Wadena-DC vs. Plato
Wadena-Deer Creek head coach Ron Schertler said the team had a lot of hard hit balls right at people and couldn't get the timely hit during a 4-1 defeat to Plato in the semifinals of the Division II State Tournament in Ely.
Plato used a strong pitching performance from Drew Hedke to pick up the win. He went the distance and allowed one run on seven hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.
Plato jumped ahead in the second inning with a solo home run from Korey Johnson. Plato added three unearned runs, capitalizing on a pair of Wadena-DC miscues.
Payton Rondestvedt settled in on the mound and allowed just three base runners the rest of the game after the rough second inning. He gave up four runs, only one of them was earned, on five hits. He walked two batters and struck out seven.
Wadena-DC had chances throughout, but couldn't get the timely hit. Wadena-DC stranded a runner in the second when Colby Schertler doubled. Preston Warren singled in the third but did not score. Wyatt Hamann and Lleyten Pettit each singled in the fourth but did not score.
Wadena-DC broke through in the seventh inning. Pettit was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning which was followed by a Chase Nordlund double. Warren singled home a run, however, Wadena-DC could not complete the comeback.
Warren led the way at the plate with three hits and an run batted in. Hamann, Schertler, Pettit and Nordlund recorded hits as well with Schertler and Nordlund recording doubles.
Wadena-DC vs. Caledonia
Wadena-DC had its season come to a close in the third place game against Caledonia. Caledonia jumped ahead early and earned a 6-1 victory over Wadena-DC in the season finale for both teams.
Eric Augdahl drove in the game's first run with an RBI single, however, Wadena-DC escaped a bases loaded jam when Pettit induced a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Colby Mann.
Caledonia added to its lead in the third inning. Cole Folson delivered a two-out RBI single, scoring Tate Meiners, who singled to start the frame, which made it 2-0 after three innings of play.
Wadena-DC cut into the lead when Colby Schertler doubled and scored on an RBI single by Josh Dykhoff, which made it 2-1. However, Caledonia responded with a run in the fifth. Casie Meiners doubled, which was followed by a pair of walks to Folson and Colby Mann to load the bases. Wadena-DC got the ground ball but the only play was to first for the fielder's choice, which made it 3-1.
Wadena-DC had an opportunity to go ahead in the fifth inning. Max Phillips walked, which was followed by a Warren single and Justin Dykhoff being hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, a strike out from Augdahl ended the threat.
Caledonia put the finishing touches on the game with three more runs in the seventh inning. Audgahl drove in a pair of runs with a triple and a double by Folson brought in the final run.
Pettit took the loss on the mound for Wadena-DC. He went four and 1/3rd innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He walked four and hit two batters. It was Pettit's only loss on the mound for either high school baseball or legion baseball. Noah Roers pitched and inning and a third. He allowed three runs on four hits. Phillips finished by giving up two hits and striking out one batter.
