It was runs a plenty when the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale and Wadena-Deer Creek softball teams squared off on April 30 in Verndale. The teams combined for 31 runs when the Raiders earned a 20-11 victory over the Wolverines.
Wadena-DC started strong in the first inning when Hailey Wiederich drove in three runs and Mackenzie Carsten drove in a run, but the Raiders answered with two in the first as well.
An error allowed Wadena-DC to extend its lead in the second inning to 7-2, but the Raiders answered again with three of their own.
The Raiders grabbed the lead for good with seven runs in the third inning, making it 12-7. Wadena-DC answered back with four in the fifth, cutting it to 12-11. Mercedes Schulz drove in three runs in the big inning for Wadena-DC with a bases clearing double. However, it was the second straight inning the Wolverines left the bases full.
The Raiders answered with three in the fifth and five more in the sixth, pulling away for a 20-11 victory over Wadena-DC.
Mackenzie Carsten allowed 12 runs on 10 hits, while striking out one in two and two-thirds innings of work.
Courtny Warren, Madison Carsten, Kyla Ness, Hailey Wiederich, Mercedes Schulz and Nevada Schulz had two hits each in the game. Wiederich and Mercedes Schulz each drove in three runs while Mackenzie Carsten and Nevada Schulz drove in a run as well.
