The Wadena-Deer Creek girls track and field team closed out a busy week with a pair of outdoor invitationals in Park Rapids on April 16 and Pillager on April 18.
The Wadena-DC girls team finished second overall at Pillager. The Wolverines came out of the event with 139.50 points, while Pillager was first with 216.50 points. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale came in third, followed by Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in fourth and Pine River-Backus in fifth.
Mikaela Malone built on a strong performance in Park Rapids with another first place finish in Pillager. She led the way in the 100m dash with a time of 13.25 seconds.
Malone helped the 400m dash team to a first place finishing time of 55.71. She was joined on the team by Kylee Collins, Madison Packer and Laytee Chessor.
The 3200m relay team of Emma Mehl, Ally Pavek, Sam Malone and Johanna Brunsberg came in first place with a finishing time of 10 minutes, 54.31 seconds.
The Wolverines received several strong second place finishes as well. Kennedy Gravelle was second in the discus, while Abby Motschenbacher came in second in the 1600m run. Emma Ries earned second place honors in the 3200m run, while Malone was second in the long jump. Leah Spilman came in second in the shot put, while the 1600m relay team of Eve Collins, Motschenbacher, Anna Osberg and Ally Pavek came in second as well.
Park Rapids Invitational
The Wadena-DC girls track and field team opened the week with a fifth place finish at the Park Rapids Invitational. The Wolverines were without the services of their throwers and pole vaulters for the meet, which impacted their team score.
Park Rapids Area finished first with 141.37 points, while Osakis was second with 136 points. Crookston came in third with 87.37 points, while Staples-Motley was fourth. Wadena-DC finished with 65.37 points for fifth place.
It was a strong showing again for Mikaela Malone. She finished first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.75 seconds. She earned second place honors in the long jump and was the lead leg of the 800m relay team, who finished second as well. She was joined by Kylee Collins, Lola Pulver and Laytee Chessor. Malone also ran the opening leg of the third place finishing 400m relay team with Madison Packer, Collins and Chessor.
The 1600m relay team earned third place honors behind the running of Eve Collins, Anna Osberg, Johanna Brunsberg and Abby Motschenbacher.
