The Wadena-Deer Creek girls track and field team came home with a sixth place finish from the Little Amik at Bemidji State State University on April 2.

Thief River Falls finished first with 85 points, while Park Rapids Area came in second place with 54.5 points, Frazee was third with 53 points, while Pillager came in fourth with 48.5 points. Pequot Lakes rounded out the top five with 48 points. The Wolverines finished close behind with 44 points for sixth place.

Wadena-DC head coach Marc Reynolds said it was another meet where the team wasn’t at full strength due to the juniors taking the ACT and a senior class trip.

“Our girls team has a nice mixture of young seventh and eighth graders, all the way up to juniors and seniors, who’ve been with the team for five or six years,” Reynolds said. “We are excited to see what these girls can do as the season goes on.”

The Wolverines continued to show their strength in the 3200 meter relay with a win during the Little Amik race. It came after their second place finish in the opening meet of the season.  Emma Mehl, Sam Malone, Johanna Brunsberg and Abby Motschenbacher finished with a time of 11:11.73 for top honors.

Mikeala Malone earned first place honors in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.22 seconds. She captured third place honors in the long jump as well when she leapt 15 feet, nine inches.

Leah Spillman was fourth in the shot put at 30 feet, two inches, while Emma Erkenbrack was fifth, with personal records with the same length.

Motschenbacher earned fifth place honors in the 800 meter run when she finished with a time of 2:37.64.

The Wolverines opening home event for April 8 has been cancelled. They hope to compete outside on April 12 in Perham.
