The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines enter the 2018 Section 6A volleyball playoffs with a different role compared to a year ago. Last year, the Wolverines were the hunted and not the hunters as they captured the section championship. This year, the role is reversed as the Wolverines enter as the hunters.
This year, the New York Mills Eagles enter with the target on their back. The Eagles rolled through the regular season and earned the No. 1 seed in the North. Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley earned the No. 1 seed from the south, while Henning earned the No. 2 seed.
The Wolverines enter as the No. 3 seed in the north. The Wolverines received and opening-round bye and will take on Menahga in the first round. Menahga defeated Rothsay in the opening round 25-15, 25-29 and 25-14 to advance to the first round. Wadena-Deer Creek defeated Menahga earlier in the season in straight sets. In that victory, Ashley Adams had 13 kills and Kennedy Gravelle finished with 12.
The Wolverines hope to continue to get that balance as the playoffs move along. If they win in the opening round, they have a stern test looming in Barnesville. Barnesville defeated the Wolverines in five sets in their only meeting during the season. It was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams with the Trojans running away with it in set five. It appeared that the Wolverines were set to take the match in four, but Elora Passa and her teammates had other ideas and went on a late rally. They used the momentum from that win in game four to cruise in the fifth set. Gravelle had 17 kills, while Adams had 12 in the defeat.
Those two squads could meet in the quarterfinals in Perham on Oct. 26. In the other half of the subsection. New York Mills, the No. 1 seed, takes on Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal. Pelican Rapids takes on Park Christian Academy, while Barnesville will take on Sebeka. The W-DC/Menahga winner will take on the Barnesville/Sebeka winner in Perham at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26.
In the south subsection, Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley takes on West Central Area, while Underwood hosts Breckenridge. Brandon-Evansville takes on Wheaton and Henning hosts Parkers Prairie. The quarterfinal round takes place on Oct. 26, with the semifinals on Oct. 30 and the Section 6A Championship is set for Nov. 3.
