The Wadena-Deer Creek softball team held off a surging Swanville squad in the final inning on its way to a 9-8 victory at the Wadena softball field on May 15.

The Wolverines erased a 5-2 deficit with a seven-run fourth inning and held on as Swanville rallied for two in the sixth inning and one in the seventh.

Wadena-Deer Creek came up with some timely plays in the seventh inning. After an errant throw allowed one run to score, Laura Krause fired to Kyla Ness to record the second out of the inning at the plate.

With runners on first and second, the Wolverines called upon Casey Volkmann. The next batter reached on a fielder’s choice, but Volkmann induced a fly ball to Nevada Schulz in left field to secure the win with the bases left full.

Mackenzie Carsten earned the win on the mound. She went five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. She struck out three, walked one and hit one batter.

The Wolverines took advantage of their seven hits, turning them into nine runs. Kyle Ness, Lila Lohmiller and Hailey Wiederich each drove in a pair of runs for the Wolverines. Courtny Warren and Carsten drove in a run each. Warren scored three times in the game for the Wolverines. The Wolverines took advantage of four walks and three hit batters in the game.

Lohmiller and Wiederich led the way at the plate with two hits each.

The victory improves the Wolverines to 8-8 overall. They close out the regular season with a doubleheader against Menahga on Thursday, May 17 at 4 p.m. at the Wadena softball field.
