The Wadena-Deer Creek softball team continued it’s high scoring ways in a doubleheader with Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale on April 24 in Bertha. However, the Wolverines earned a split as the Raiders rallied for a 16-8 victory in game one, but the Wolverines bounced back to take game two 8-5.

Thirteen runs in the final two innings proved to be the Wolverines undoing in the first game with Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale. The Raiders scored four in the fifth and nine in the sixth, pulling away for the 16-8 victory.

The Wolverines led six three before the Raiders came alive in the late innings. Casey Volkmann took the loss on the mound. She pitched into the sixth inning, striking out four and walking two batters.

Lila Lohmiller led the charge for the Wolverines. She finished with four hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Kyla Ness added a double and two runs scored, while Alex Kahl finished with a double.

The offense continued in game two for the Wolverines. The Wolverines built up a 4-0 lead before holding off a late surge from the Raiders for the 8-5 victory. The Wolverines belted out 11 hits and capitalized on seven Raider errors. It was the second straight game the Raiders committed seven errors, this time the Wolverines were able to capitalize.

Mackenzie Carsten picked up her first win of the season in the circle for the Wolverines. She went the distance and allowed one walk and struck out two.

Volkmann led the way at the plate with three hits and two runs batted in. She had a double for one of her three hits. Ness had a pair of hits and three runs scored.
