Has winter finally left us? WDC School District sure hopes so as we look forward to the promise of spring and a strong finish to the year with our annual Ice Scream for Books event this Thursday, April 10 in the Elementary Gymnasium from 6 to 7:30 p.m. We have been especially grateful for the support our parents and community has given this event throughout the years. It is one of our best attended events, with well over 10,000 books exchanged and over 300 ice cream treats enjoyed each year since it began in the fall of 2003. Most importantly, this event highlights the importance of reading for enjoyment and re-using good books. The excellent involvement of our parents and caregivers is a testament to the values they instill in our young readers.
Another way parents and caregivers can become involved is by joining the newly formed WDC Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) This fledgling group has met three times so far and will meet for a final organizational meeting on Wednesday, April 30 at 4:30 p.m. in the elementary office conference room. The PTO’s mission is to support the teachers and staff in providing a learning environment that enhances the academic experience of our children and strengthen the communities in which we teach, learn, and live. And finally I like to extend a huge thank you to all students, staff, and community members for participating in our annual Kindergarten Round-Up on Monday, March 17. So far the WDC Class of 2027 has 66 students enrolled so far and about 14 to 20 more expected to join them before next fall.
As we wind down the final two months of the school year our students, tested grades 3 through 11, will be participating in online testing for Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) in reading, writing, mathematics and science. Please assist their efforts with plenty of rest and good nutrition.
